Head Bail

Animals strike the headbail with considerable force, but these headbails are designed to endure any impact, thereby enhancing the safety of both the animals and the handlers during restraint. As a result, a standalone C1000 Headbail stands out as the perfect upgrade for animal restraint in your current cattle yards. The well-being of any cattle herd is nearly impossible to manage without a headbail, which is frequently regarded as the most crucial element in the yard.

Introduction

In general terms there are two types of headbails; self-catching headbails and full opening manual concertina-style headbails. Self catching headbails such as the Te Pari Automatic Headbail can be adjusted to accommodate different size animals. The vertical double doors swing in automatically to lock when the animal moves forward. This gate is intended for quieter cattle without horns and normally need adjustment for different sizes of stock.

How it works

The cattle headbail gates are partially opened back into the race, and as the animal attempts to push through, the gates close and lock automatically. A single lever lifts the latch and allows the animal to pass through when the operation has finished. This lever can be controlled remotely with a rope and pulley. The neck space adjusts to suit different sized animals, there’s a gap below the yoke so the animal can’t choke if it goes down, and cleats are provided for a nose halter.

Main Functions

Key feature

Safety: The head bail should be safe and easy to operate, with no holes that could catch fingers or hands. It should also have a positive locking system that can be operated with one hand.

Adjustability: The head bail should be adjustable to accommodate different animal sizes.

Head control: The head bail should provide adequate head control without injuring the animal. A head bail with curved bars that form a diamond shape when closed provides better head control than a head bail with straight bars.

Ease of use: The head bail should be easy to use and quiet when being operated.

Type: There are two basic types of head bails: walk through and guillotine. Walk through head bails are safer for the animal and allow the animal to move forward into a yard in front of the crush. Guillotine type head bails are easier to build, but can be dangerous for the animal and operator.

Additional features: Some head bails may have a chin or neck bar, or a mechanism to steady the animal's head

Purpose

A cattle head bail is a device used to restrain cattle for procedures like vaccinations, marking, and medical examinations. Head bails are an important part of a cattle crush system and are often considered the most important feature of a cattle yard.

Benefits

Reduce stress and injuries: A head bail can help to reduce stress and injuries to the cattle.

Keep the handler safe: A head bail can help to keep the handler safe from accidents and harm.

Improve beef production: The effectiveness of a head bail can directly affect the ease and security of beef production.

Improve animal health: A head bail is often considered the most important feature of a cattle yard for the health of the herd.
