Chain Link Fence

Chain-link fence (also referred to as wire netting, wire-mesh fence, chain-wire fence, cyclone fence, hurricane fence, or diamond-mesh fence) is a type of woven fence usually made from galvanized or linear low-density polyethylene-coated steel wire.

Introduction

A chain-link fence is a woven fence made from steel wire that is bent into a zigzag pattern to create a diamond pattern. The fence is attached to posts that are driven into the ground or set in concrete. Chain-link fences are also known as wire netting, wire-mesh fence, chain-wire fence, cyclone fence, hurricane fence, or diamond-mesh fence.

Advantage

Cost-effective

Chain link fences are generally less expensive than other types of fencing.

Durable

Chain link fences are made from strong, corrosion-resistant materials like galvanized steel. They can withstand harsh weather conditions and last up to 20 years or more with proper maintenance.

Easy to maintain

Chain link fences require minimal maintenance, such as cleaning with soap and water. You can also easily repair or replace damaged sections without affecting the rest of the fence.

Versatile

Chain link fences can be stretched across rugged terrain and can be customized to meet your specific needs.

Secure

Chain link fences provide a physical barrier to keep out intruders and stray animals. You can also add additional security features like barbed wire or razor wire.

Technical

Chain link fences are known for their durability, versatility, and low maintenance, making them suitable for residential, commercial, and industrial applications. The following are the key technical parameters of a chain link fence:

1. Wire Material
Galvanized Steel: Offers excellent rust and corrosion resistance.
PVC-Coated Steel: Provides additional protection and aesthetics with various color options.

Stainless Steel: Ideal for high-corrosion environments, offering superior durability.

2. Wire Diameter (Gauge)
Range: Typically 1.6 mm to 5 mm.

Heavier gauges (lower numbers) provide increased strength and durability for industrial or high-security applications.

3. Mesh Size
Range: 25 mm × 25 mm to 100 mm × 100 mm.

Smaller mesh sizes are used for security or to contain smaller animals, while larger sizes are suitable for general-purpose fencing.

4. Fence Height
Range: 0.9 m to 6 m (customizable).
Common heights:
1.2 m to 1.8 m: Residential or garden use.
2 m to 4 m: Commercial and industrial use.

Above 4 m: High-security applications like prisons or sports fields.

5. Roll Length
Range: Standard rolls are 10 m to 30 m in length.

Custom lengths can be made to suit specific project requirements.

6. Coating Thickness
Galvanized Coating:
Zinc coating weight ranges from 40 g/m² to 300 g/m² (hot-dip galvanization for maximum rust resistance).
PVC Coating:

Thickness ranges from 0.4 mm to 1.0 mm, with color options such as green, black, white, or custom.

7. Post Specifications
Material: Steel, aluminum, or concrete.
Diameter of Round Posts: 48 mm to 89 mm.
Shape: Round, square, or rectangular, depending on installation needs.

Wall Thickness: 1.5 mm to 4 mm (thicker posts are used for heavier fences).

8. Tensile Strength
Wire Tensile Strength:
The standard range is 350 MPa to 550 MPa, ensuring durability and resistance to deformation.

Breaking Load: Higher for industrial and high-security applications.

9. Fence Accessories
Tie Wire: Secures the chain link fabric to the posts.
Tension Wire: Installed at the top and bottom for added stability.
Barbed Wire (Optional): This can be added for extra security.

Fittings: Galvanized or PVC-coated caps, clamps, and tension bands.

10. Corrosion Resistance
Materials and coatings ensure the chain link fence withstands harsh weather conditions, including:
UV exposure
Rain and humidity
Saline environments (coastal areas)

Main functions

Key Feature

Easy to repair

If damage does occur, repairing a chain link fence is generally straightforward and does not usually require the entire fence to be replaced.

Quick installation

Chain link fences can be installed quickly and efficiently, often by just two people.

Visibility

How to Use

Usage Instructions

· Prepare materials: Calculate how much material you need.

· Install posts: Mark and install end and intermediate posts.

· Add tension bars: Slide a tension bar through the chain link mesh at the end of the roll. Then, attach the tension bar to the terminal post with tension bands.

· Hang the fabric: Unroll the chain link fabric on the ground along the fence line. Slide the fabric up and against the posts.

· Stretch the fabric: Walk along the fence, taking out any slack.

· Attach to top rail: Loosely attach the fabric to the top rail with a few wire ties.

· Connect sections: To connect two sections of fence, place them end to end and wind a loose strand of wire down through the fence in a corkscrew pattern.

· Add gate hardware: Attach fence gate hinges and latch hardware to the gate posts.

· Add end post caps: Use a rubber mallet to drive end post caps onto the gate, corner, and end posts

Cautions for Use

Chain link fences require regular maintenance to ensure they continue to function properly. You should inspect your fence at least twice a year and make repairs as needed. You should also clean your fence regularly, apply rust protection yearly, and avoid growing plants in or near your fence.

Components

  • · Tension Bar — The tension bar is used to hold the mesh in place and further tighten the tension. The tension bar attaches to the terminal post.

    · Post Cap — The post cap is what goes at the top of a terminal post. Post caps come in various shapes. Line post caps are used if a top rail will go on a chain link fence.

    · Brace Band — Use brace bands to attach the chain link top rail to the corner post, end post, gate post, or frame. Brace bands go around the terminal post and help keep everything in place.

    · Tension Band — If you need to attach the chain link mesh to a terminal post, tension bands help you create a secure connection. This is used alongside the tension bar to secure your chain link fence.

  • · Terminal Post — Whenever you need to change the direction of your chain link fence or install a gate, terminal posts help create a strong end line. Use this post along with the other fittings to ensure you will have a stable fence.

    · Tension Wire — Tension wire usually goes at the bottom of your chain link fence and further tightens the mesh of your chain link fence. Keep pets and other small animals from crawling inside and out of your fence with tension wire.

    · Chain Link Fabric — One of the most visible components of a chain link fence, the fabric, or mesh, is used to create a barrier around your chain link posts.
